Leny Yoro was set to make his first appearance of the season for Manchester United’s Under-21s against Altrincham on Tuesday night, according to reports. The Frenchman has trained throughout the November international break and was among the first players to meet new head coach Ruben Amorim at Carrington.
He has now recovered from a metatarsal fracture he suffered during pre-season, which has delayed his competitive debut after his £59million move from Lille in the summer
And, according to the Manchester Evening News, Yoro was informed on Monday that he was due to start for the U21s at Altrincham in the 4-0 National League Cup victory.
However, it’s claimed that Amorim ordered that the 19-year-old centre-back was withdrawn from the squad after watching him in training.
Amorim oversaw his first training session at Carrington on Monday.
In a brief video clip released by United, Yoro was filmed starting on the right of United’s back three during a training match, flanked by Jonny Evans in the middle and Luke Shaw on the left.
Yoro is anticipated to play a crucial role in Amorim’s new set-up as United transition to a 3-4-3 formation, and the teenage talent could make his debut away at Ipswich Town on Sunday.
The Red Devils’ marquee summer arrival fractured the metatarsal bone in his left foot during his second pre-season start in a friendly with Arsenal in Los Angeles on July 26.
Amorim will be cautious with Yoro’s return, but he could be forced to throw him into action at Portman Road this weekend amid uncertainty surrounding other centre-backs.
Harry Maguire hasn’t been spotted in training and looks to be ruled out of the trip to East Anglia. The United No. 5 has been out for seven weeks with a calf injury he sustained in the first half of the goalless draw with Aston Villa on October 6.
Victor Lindelof is also a major doubt after being forced off while representing Sweden during the international break.
There is a question mark over Lisandro Martinez’s fitness, too. He pulled out from the Argentina squad due to a back injury after receiving treatment from United’s physio Jordan Reece during the 3-0 win against Leicester City last time out.
Tyrell Malacia made his first appearance for the club since May 2023 for the Under-21s in their EFL Trophy defeat at Huddersfield Town last week and is nearing a return to senior football.
Malacia has been involved in team training for over a month and could be pushing for a spot in Sunday’s squad.
Shaw, who last featured for United on February 18, is also back in full training and has previous experience playing as a left-centre-back and left-wing-back in a 3-4-3 system.
