Liverpool ‘thinking of £250m duo’ as Slot goes for jugular with transfer splurge

Liverpool could keep their foot on the gas this summer even after transfer deals for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez are formally signed off. The Reds have gone wild since the window opened, with Jeremie Frimpong signed to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, Wirtz on the verge of becoming a Premier League-record signing from Bayer Leverkusen, and Kerkez edging closer to a big-money switch from Bournemouth.

Both of the latter two deals are expected to be announced over the coming days. All agreements have been reached over the £116million signing of Wirtz, and they are believed to be ‘imminent‘ for Kerkez after the Cherries snapped up Adrien Truffert as his replacement.

But Arne Slot and co. may not be done there. According to talkSPORT, Liverpool retain an interest in Newcastle United stars Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Anfield bosses are huge fans of Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season and 21 the season before that. Liverpool are likely to need a new centre-forward before the window slams shut, with Darwin Nunez set to depart after failing to make the grade under Slot.

Gordon, meanwhile, came ‘really close‘ to joining the Reds last summer before Newcastle stepped in to block the deal. The winger is a boyhood Liverpool fan and also has admirers at Arsenal, according to reports.

The major catch for both Isak and Gordon is that neither of them would come cheap. Newcastle are believed to have pinned Isak with an eye-watering £150m price tag, and reports linking Gordon to Anfield have floated the £100m figure in relation to the 24-year-old.

That much is no particular surprise given that Newcastle also shelled out serious money for the pair. Isak’s career has gone stratospheric since he commanded a £63m transfer fee three years ago, and Gordon was no freebie at £45m six months later.

Liverpool, like every other Premier League team, do have PSR to comply with. And although they kept their powder dry during Slot’s first season at the helm, moves for Wirtz, Frimpong and Kerkez are sure to have made a huge dent in their wiggle room.

The Reds may therefore be forced to offload valuable players if they are to make room for stars of Isak and Gordon’s calibre. Jarell Quansah, Andy Robertson, Harvey Elliott, Luis Diaz and Federico Chiesa have all been linked with summer exits, as well as £85m recruit Nunez.
