Luis Diaz has issued an eyebrow-raising statement on his future after the Liverpool forward was reportedly the subject of a bid from Barcelona. Liverpool waved off Barcelona’s initial approach for Diaz, with the Premier League champions insisting he isn’t for sale.
Diaz netted 13 times in the league en route to Liverpool lifting their 20th title in English football, with the Colombian international registering a further five assists. Alongside Barcelona, it was reported last summer that clubs in Saudi Arabia, as well as Liverpool’s Premier League rivals, had been sniffing around the ex-Porto man.
However, amid this summer’s transfer speculation, Diaz has responded to claims he could be on his way out of Liverpool, saying: “I’m very happy at Liverpool – I’ve always said so.” Diaz didn’t go as far as completely ruling out a move though, hinting his future could hinge on how contract talks with the Merseyside outfit work out. He added: “They’ve welcomed me very well.
“The transfer market is opening, and we’re trying to arrange what’s best for us. I’m waiting to see what happens. If Liverpool gives us a good extension or I have to see out my two-year contract, I’ll be happy. It all depends on them. I’m here to decide and see what’s best for us and the future.”
Diaz is believed to be part of Arne Slot’s plans for the upcoming season, having impressed under the Dutchman during their 2024/25 title win. Liverpool will only entertain Diaz’s exit if a club submits a significant offer, or the player pushes for a move himself.
Liverpool have already bagged their first signing of the summer window, securing the services of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for under £30m, with team-mate Florian Wirtz, as well as Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, said to be the next on the shopping list. Slot insisted Liverpool didn’t need a major overhaul following their second title win in five years, saying last month: “We have just won the league, we were so competitive vs PSG, it is not easy to find better players to improve us. They need to be available and we need to be able to afford them.”
Captain Virgil van Dijk issued a similar verdict, saying: “Whatever happens in terms of players going out, players coming in, I think it should be a big summer. I think they’re planning to make it a big summer, so we all have to trust the board, as a Liverpool-connected fan, to do the right job. I think Liverpool should be able to challenge for titles in the upcoming years.”
