Man City star ‘not in Club World Cup squad’ and Man Utd could now pounce

Manchester City have raised eyebrows by leaving James McAtee out of their Club World Cup squad amidst growing interest from cross-city rivals Manchester United. The decision not to include the promising academy product in the prestigious FIFA tournament squad could be a pivotal moment in determining his career path. Instead of travelling with City’s first team, McAtee has been called up to England’s provisional squad for the U21 European Championship in Slovakia.

Despite having made impressive strides, including an FA Cup hat-trick and Premier League contributions, McAtee is still very much proving himself. The omission has sparked attention from potential suitors, including none other than Manchester United. A transfer directly to the Red Devils would undoubtedly stir controversy due to the fierce rivalry between the clubs, coupled with McAtee’s recognised potential.

According to the Daily Mail, Guardiola’s decision may signal that McAtee’s days with City could be drawing to a close. The manager has openly discussed the situation and while keen on keeping the player, he appreciates McAtee’s ambition for more game time.

Guardiola commented in April: “For the age, I’d like him to stay. But I understand players want more minutes. He can play different positions but I don’t know how the squad will be and we will see.”

Another consideration is that McAtee’s contract runs out in 2026, leaving City’s management with the decision to either offer him a new contract or sell him before he becomes a free agent. The academy product has previously shone on loan in the Championship, but his transfer fee would likely be higher than a second-tier club could afford if he were to leave the Etihad.

McAtee himself is interested in a move to the Bundesliga, where he’s been linked with clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen. He’s witnessed first-hand how young English players like Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham have flourished in the German league.

Allowing McAtee to depart would be a gamble for Guardiola, who has faced criticism for letting City’s academy players go without giving them a proper chance. Several of these players, including Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, have gone on to achieve great success elsewhere.
