Man Utd and Chelsea swap deal now more likely after Ollie Watkins development

It’s been a busier summer as far as Manchester United and Chelsea are concerned, but both clubs still have plenty of work to do in the market. The Blues have been linked to both Xavi Simons and Jorrel Hato in recent days, whereas United are still pushing to sign a striker following Viktor Gyokeres’ move to Arsenal.

Gyokeres had looked likely to join United earlier in the window, when it was reported that the lack of European football at Old Trafford wasn’t a deal breaker. Alas, the Red Devils have been forced to look elsewhere following Arsenal’s successful pursuit.

While maybe not their first priority this summer, United have been linked with a move for Nicolas Jackson, who may have been knocked down the pecking order following Chelsea’s summer business. The recently crowned Club World Cup champions have welcomed both Liam Delap and Joao Pedro to Stamford Bridge – two players capable of leading the line and playing centrally.

Eyebrows were raised when it was reported Chelsea valued Jackson at a whopping £100million, with the capital club having been influenced by the £79m deal agreed between Liverpool and Eintracht Frankfurt for Ekitike. But, if Ruben Amorim and United feel like Jackson is the best man available on the market for the job, what’s to say they couldn’t offer up Alejandro Garnacho in return?

The Argentine winger made headlines after criticising Amorim’s decision to leave him on the bench for United’s Europa League final, with talk that his United career is now dead in the water. Chelsea emerged as a potential suitor for the 21-year-old but were initially put off by United’s own valuation of the attacker.

Now, though, both sides have players the other one is interested in, but might not be able to afford outright. Could it be a case of a simple player swap deal for United and Chelsea, or would that be too straightforward in the world of extortionate transfer fees and PSR restrictions?
