Manchester United chiefs have decided to leave the power with head coach Ruben Amorim when it comes to Jadon Sancho’s future at Old Trafford, according to reports. Recent weeks have spawned intensifying speculation that Chelsea are considering paying a significant fee to pull out of their obligation to buy Sancho this summer.
The 24-year-old is on a season-long loan at Stamford Bridge, but the deal is due to become permanent for around £25million if Chelsea finish 14th or higher in the Premier League. With that outcome all but guaranteed, United will be preparing for life without Sancho and deliberating over where to invest his transfer fee. However, suggestions that the Blues could breach the agreement have sparked the possibility of a shock Old Trafford return at the end of the campaign.
In that case, Chelsea would reportedly have to pay United a sizeable fee, and the expectation is that the Red Devils would then shift Sancho elsewhere.
According to ESPN, the decision will be Amorim’s, given it was Erik ten Hag who sanctioned Sancho’s exit after the pair’s public row.
The England international refused to apologise after effectively calling Ten Hag a liar on social media after he claimed his absence from a squad at Arsenal was due to training performance.
His behaviour led to a four-month exile at Carrington before he returned to Borussia Dortmund in January 2024, from where he joined United in a £73million transfer three years earlier.
After Dortmund opted against making Sancho’s return permanent, he spent the last pre-season with Ten Hag’s squad after clear-the-air talks.
His missed penalty in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City was his final action as a United player before leaving for Chelsea on deadline day.
But Sancho has also failed to impress in West London, scoring two goals and providing four assists in 23 Premier League appearances.
United will consider Sancho’s situation a win-win.
They will either receive the £25m fee and get his eye-watering salary off the books or, if Chelsea pull out, pocket most of the price tag and have the option to raise more cash by selling him elsewhere.
Amorim’s potential decision unsurprisingly attracts intrigue. He needs more players suited to his system to fill the two No. 10 roles behind the striker.
Sancho should fit the requirements, but there is a sense that bridges have already been burned with the club and its fans.
His Chelsea stay in a £25m deal remains the most likely outcome.
