Man Utd face Liam Delap transfer rejection as star keen on ‘two rivals’

Liam Delap could reportedly reject a summer transfer to Manchester United, dealing a significant blow to the struggling Premier League side. United have identified him as a key transfer target as Ruben Amorim seeks to bring in a top-tier forward.

Amorim turned his attention to Delap after co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe informed him that United couldn’t meet the £80m price tag for Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres.

Despite United making their interest clear, 22-year-old Delap has his doubts about joining the beleaguered giants, according to the Daily Star. It’s believed that Delap wants to play for a club competing in Europe, with Chelsea or Arsenal being his preferred choices.

Unless United win the Europa League, Amorim’s team will not be participating in European competition next season. Delap is eager to secure a spot in England’s 2026 World Cup squad and wants to perform at a club operating at the highest level.

The former Manchester City youth player has a £30m release clause in his contract with Ipswich and has decided to leave if they are relegated. Losing out on Delap would be a significant setback for Amorim.

The Portuguese coach has bemoaned his team’s lack of goals this season and recognises that signing a proven striker is a priority.

Amorim may now have to start from scratch in his search for a forward. United have expressed interest in Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli. However, the Nigerian international’s wage demands have deterred the club.

The crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United on Sunday underscored the importance of Europa League success for Amorim and United. Winning the tournament is their only ticket to European football next year, offering a significant financial boost and the allure of a Champions League spot to attract top players.

United’s journey hit a bump last week when they were held to a 2-2 draw in Lyon, courtesy of two blunders by Andre Onana that handed the French side an equaliser in the first leg. The second leg at Old Trafford this Thursday is pivotal for the Red Devils’ season and transfer ambitions.
