Man Utd ‘forced to pay extra fee’ for Ruben Amorim on top of £8.3m compensation

Manchester United will reportedly pay an additional fee on top of their £8.3million compensation package to land Ruben Amorim early.

The Red Devils were set to wait until the end of the month in order to get Amorim through the door, as a result of a 30-day notice period inserted into his contract, allowing the Portuguese giants time to find his replacement.

But instead Amorim will take just 10 days after Friday’s announcement that he will succeed Erik ten Hag, giving interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy just two more games in charge.

The Daily Mail claim that in order to hire Amorim before the notice period in his Sporting contract, an additional £900,000 fee has been paid to get him to Old Trafford for a November 11 start date.

That amounts to £9.2m in total with Amorim becoming the next United head coach, a change in title from Ten Hag who was officially described as the club’s manager.

In a short statement, United confirmed the appointment, saying: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.

“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.”
