Manchester United are attempting to hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s move for Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel before the January transfer deadline, according to reports. The Red Devils have accelerated their pursuit of Tel on an initial loan until the end of the season to hand Ruben Amorim much-needed attacking reinforcements.
Multiple Premier League clubs are said to be circling the 19-year-old after he decided to leave Bayern in search of regular playing time earlier this month.
United are among his suitors as they look to solve their staggering lack of goals, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both misfiring this season.
Hojlund and Zirkzee have scored a combined five times in the Premier League, contributing to United’s measly tally of 28 after 23 games.
With Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho potentially departing before Monday’s deadline, the Old Trafford giants have had their feelers out for fresh firepower.
And they have reportedly made their move for Tel, who is said to view Manchester as his preferred destination despite more advanced interest from Tottenham.
Sky Sports report that Spurs have verbally agreed a £50million deal with Bayern but haven’t yet received the green light from Tel.
However, according to Sky Germany, United have entered talks with the Bavarian outfit over a potential loan deal and are firmly in the race for his signature.
It’s claimed a move is dependent on Rashford or Garnacho making way in the coming days, but contact has been initiated with the Bundesliga goliaths to buy some time.
The report adds that Tel is hesitating over a Spurs switch as he’d currently prefer a loan exit, which is also United’s preference.
Earlier this week, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl suggested the club were open to both potential exit formats.
He said: “Mathys is still a Bayern player. Accordingly, if he’s there tomorrow, he will hopefully be looking to score goals. That remains the case at the moment. There’s no new situation.
“Mathys is a very gifted player. His move to Bayern was very good. Whether it’s a loan or a sale, we’ll see. It needs to be right for all parties.”
After watching Spurs beat Elfsborg 3-0 on Thursday, Ange Postecoglou confirmed that club chiefs were pushing to sign Tel.
“I can’t tell you anything about Tel. I am focusing on getting the team ready [to face Brentford on Thursday]… other people are working in the background.”
But United appear firmly in the frame and will retain hope of sealing a deal as long as Tel stalls over a move to north London.
