Man Utd target £60m striker who ‘wants to join Red Devils’ after Zirkzee deal

Toney, who in January returned to Premier League football after serving a ban for breaching FA gambling regulations, has been limited to a bit part role during the tournament. However, he’s done his transfer value no harm, creating the winner for Harry Kane against Slovakia before slotting a ‘no look’ penalty in the shootout win over Switzerland.

Brentford are expected to demand a minimum of £60m for the striker, who has also been linked with Arsenal. The 28-year-old is contracted to the club until 2025, meaning Thomas Frank and co risk losing him on a free if they don’t cash in during this summer window.

United are currently restricted with their approach, due to FA regulations put in place before Euro 2024. The authority ruled that clubs are not allowed to make contact with players over moves until they come back from the tournament, and England going all the way has undoubtedly delayed deals for a number of stars.

However, according to German publication Sport Bild, Toney has indicated his desire to join United. And the player’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, has reportedly informed the Bees that his client wants to move to Manchester.

Toney himself has been coy on speculation while out in Germany, insisting he remains focused on the task in hand with the Three Lions. But notably, he’s also not dismissed rumours of a move.

“What will be will be and my main focus is playing well and doing well for my country,” he said, ahead of the semi-final clash with the Netherlands. “I’ve been through it, transfer speculation, before.

“There’s been lots of talk of me going here, there and everywhere before in my career and I just don’t let outside noise get to me. I’m here with England now, and the main focus is doing well for England and whatever happens, happens. I can’t control it.”

It’s not just forward options who United are currently being linked with. The club are also on the verge of signing Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, in what would be a reunion with manager Erik ten Hag.
