Matthijs de Ligt lamented Manchester United’s continued failure to convert their chances after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur. Ruben Amorim’s side continued to falter in front of goal, failing to respond to James Maddison’s cheap first-half winner at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tensions are rising after the Portuguese head coach suffered his eighth Premier League defeat in 14 matches, leaving United rotting in 15th.
And the showing only intensified frustration among supporters over the club opting against replacing Marcus Rashford and Antony in the winter transfer window.
Amorim is desperately short on attacking firepower after losing Amad for the remainder of the season due to ankle ligament damage suffered in training this week.
Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho are his only senior forwards, but they boast just 28 career Premier League goals between them.
Amorim’s animated reaction to Garnacho blazing a glorious opportunity to equalise over the bar in the first half spoke volumes of the growing pressure on his shoulders.
The 40-year-old can ill afford his already-depleted attacking regiment to continue losing their heads at the sight of goal.
And De Ligt’s exasperation about the situation leaked after full-time, highlighted United’s dismal chance conversion as the difference in north London.
“I think in the end, finishing the chances is a big thing in football, and we were unlucky we couldn’t finish them today,” the centre-back explained.
“If you lose, a lot has to improve. We are not where United belongs, and if I knew the solution, I would have said it, and we would win games, but a lot needs to improve, and we have to look to ourselves to be responsible.
“We have to stick together because if we are out there on our own, we will never get results.”
He added: “It is not enough for United. We are not winning enough or scoring enough chances. We are conceding too many goals.
“There are a lot of things we need to improve, and hopefully, it will get better soon.”
United face another daunting assignment in their next Premier League outing, a Saturday lunchtime trip to face a rejuvenated Everton.
The Toffees have been flying since David Moyes’ return to Goodison Park, winning four of their last five league games and earning a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
Another defeat on Merseyside could leave United 11 points adrift of the top half of the table with 12 games remaining.
