Micah Richards suffered yet another wardrobe mishap during Tuesday night’s (January 21) Champions League coverage. The former Manchester City star, aged 36 and now a pundit for CBS Sports, was in the midst of analysing the action from across Europe along with Kate Scott, Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher.
The incident happened just as Raphinha netted a last-gasp goal for Barcelona in their remarkable 5-4 victory against Benfica. Both Richards and Carragher burst into celebration upon seeing the Brazilian score.
However, amid the excitement, the former’s blazer button seemed to give way and flew off onto the table, prompting laughter from his fellow presenters. During the replay of the moment that Richards’ button decided to pop off, Carragher could be heard saying: “Look at the button.” While Richards joked: “I had too much to eat didn’t I?”
Scott chimed in with a humorous: “That was good.” Richards attempted to fix his attire while saying: “Very big problem.” CBS posted the clip on social media and a flurry of laughter emojis dominated the comments section, with one follower dubbing the moment “comedy gold”.
Another wrote: “I love to see it.” While a third wrote: “Best reaction so far.” Drama unfolded at the Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica during the thrilling league phase tie between Barcelona and Benfica in the Champions League. The game kicked off with a bang as Vangelis Pavlidis rocketed a volley into the top of the net for the hosts just two minutes in.
However, Robert Lewandowski quickly levelled the score for Barcelona, coolly converting a penalty after Alejandro Balde was fouled in the box. Pavlidis wasn’t done yet, scoring again 22 minutes in and completing his hat-trick with a spot kick of his own eight minutes later. Barcelona’s Raphinha managed to pull one back in the second half following a botched clearance from Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, but an own goal from Ronald Araujo saw the Primera Liga side extend their lead once more.
Lewandowski converted another penalty with 78 minutes on the clock, before Eric Garcia equalised with a well-placed header four minutes from time. The match ended in a thrilling 5-4 victory for Barcelona, thanks to Raphinha’s counter-attack goal, which saw him outpace Alvaro Carreras and blast the ball into the back of the net.
The remarkable comeback certainly justified Richards’ reaction in the studio. And it’s not only time that the former footballer has suffered a clothing mishap in recent months. Alongside veterans Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, Richards had a wardrobe malfunction during a November instalment of Match of the Day.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said: “We were all together yesterday [Saturday], weren’t we? For Match of the Day, it was a long one because it was remembrance weekend, and we didn’t go on until after 11pm. Micah, would you like to tell us what happened to you just before we went on air?”
To which, Richards responded: “Basically, I went to my dressing room; when I say dressing room, I don’t want to make out we’ve got some lush dressing room. I mean, BBC is obviously brilliant to work for, but it’s more like a changing room. I’ve gone there, I’ve put on my spray, I’ve ironed my gear, looking fantastic, if I do say myself; as soon as I get to the studio, I just see Alan [Shearer] grinning.
“I’m like, ‘what’s he grinning at now?’ He said, ‘you’ve got a hole in your top’, and I think obviously he was pulling my leg, and he said, ‘no, I’m being serious’. I pull it up, and I’ve got a massive hole I couldn’t move! I was so self-conscious it was horrible.” Notorious for his energetic anaylsis, Richards was much more reserved that night due to the untimely garment gaffe.
Lineker noted: “I saw you, because you normally do quite a lot of mannerisms with your arms and stuff, but you had a big split underneath your armpit of your shirt. It was so close to the show you didn’t even have time to get another shirt. That’s what happens when you’ve got guns like that, Micah.”
