West Ham United striker Michail Antonio is set to be sidelined for at least a year after breaking his leg in a horror car accident on Saturday afternoon, according to reports. The 34-year-old underwent surgery later in the day, having been airlifted to hospital after crashing his Ferrari in Essex.
West Ham have confirmed that Antonio’s condition is stable and has been conscious and communicating since the frightening incident.
But it is considered almost certain that the club’s record Premier League goalscorer won’t play again this season amid fears over his potential recovery timeline.
According to the Guardian, Antonio is expected to be out of action for at least a year. That rehabilitation period is viewed as a best-case scenario.
The Jamaica forward’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and it remains to be seen whether the car crash could lead to an early retirement.
