Pep Guardiola has left the future open for Kyle Walker at Manchester City, despite the club captain expressing his desire to exit this month. The 34-year old right-back was notably absent from the City line-up during their FA Cup victory against Salford after Guardiola disclosed Walker’s request to depart following eight seasons.
AC Milan are reportedly leading the chase for Walker’s signature, yet Guardiola emphasized that any transfer must benefit both the player and the club.
“I don’t know,” Guardiola commented when asked if he’ll select Walker to play while his future is uncertain. “It depends on how we are going to train. It depends on him.
“The situation is different now, but the transfer window will finish when it finishes and I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Guardiola opened up about the discussions with Walker: “I said to Kyle now it’s a question of the market. He is an incredible player, with incredible physicality and when he’s focused he’s unstoppable as a right-back.”
Guardiola praised Walker, saying: “He’s a top-class player. If he’s fit he can play for one, two, three or four more years as a professional.”
Reflecting on Walker’s remarkable traits, Guardiola said: “I’ve never seen a player with these physical conditions in my career. If he wants to explore a move away, the club is going to explore, and he has to decide, not me. It’s not my decision. But he has to have an agreement with the club.”
