Rio Ferdinand to miss Man Utd vs Athletic Club as TNT pundit stays in hospital

Rio Ferdinand has been sidelined from TNT Sports’ coverage for Manchester United‘s Europa League semi-final at Old Trafford on Thursday night after a sickness bug landed him in hospital. The PA news agency has learned that the illness also struck other members of Ferdinand’s family.

And while there has been no update as of Thursday on whether he is still hospitalised, it is clear he won’t be joining the punditry team for United’s second-leg clash with Athletic Club. Ferdinand took to social media on Wednesday evening, sharing a thumbs-up photo from his hospital bed and expressing his disappointment at missing out on this week’s semi-final action.

“Gutted to be missing this week’s European semi-finals,” he posted on his official X account, adding: “Wishing the team all the best – I’ll be watching every minute from the iPad!” TNT sent their well-wishes via their own X account, stating: “Get well soon, Rio.”

The former Manchester United defender didn’t hold back on his views regarding the controversial penalty awarded against Arsenal in their Champions League semi-final loss to Paris St Germain, slamming it as a “horrendous decision”.

With an illustrious career at Manchester United, Ferdinand boasts 455 appearances, six Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, two League Cups, and a Club World Cup over 12 remarkable years.

As United go into the home leg with a 3-0 advantage over Bilbao, they are seen as strong contenders to make it to the May 21 final, set to take place in Bilbao.

Tottenham play in the other semi-final and lead Bodo/Glimt 3-1 but face the Norwegians on a plastic pitch in their return fixture.

Both TNT Sports and representatives for Ferdinand have been contacted for further statements.
