Rio Ferdinand has confessed his concerns over Benjamin Sesko‘s subdued start at Manchester United, after seeing the club’s new centre-forward struggle during Sunday’s Manchester derby. Sesko, 22, was the Red Devils’ most significant summer signing, joining from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £73.7million. Despite being brought in to lead a revamped attack for United, fans have barely seen their new No.9 in action, with his first Premier League start only coming this past weekend.
Regrettably, it wasn’t a memorable match for United or Sesko, as the striker failed to make any significant impact in a game that saw United defeated 3-0. Ruben Amorim‘s squad entered the new season following their worst-ever Premier League campaign, marked by a lack of goals. Even though over £200million has been invested in bolstering the attacking line-up, Ferdinand is troubled by how little opportunity Sesko had in the derby.
On his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the former United and England defender expressed: “The one I’m worried about is Sesko. He ain’t getting no chances man, he ain’t getting no opportunities, there’s nothing created for him.
“That’s the concern. A new striker comes in the football club, gets in the team, you’ve got to think about creating chances for him. Getting him on the end of things. He’s got to think about getting on the end of things.
“That’s something I think has got to be looked at, and fixed quick. I don’t want to think about what it could turn out to be.” United’s lacklustre attack was evident as City dominated the game, leaving Ferdinand, a former player, unimpressed with his old club’s ‘weak’ performance.
“It’s depressing watching United like that,” Ferdinand continued. “The way we allowed them to get in and get goals and get opportunities – it was weak, it was powderpuff, it just lacked anything.
“I thought in the first-half, we pressed them quite well, and we had possession at times. [But then we] got in the final third, and there was zero creativity. Without Bruno [Fernandes], you’re looking at it going, ‘who else is going to create something – [Bryan] Mbeumo?’ But there’ s no real guile.”
United’s dismal start of four points from their opening four league games is their worst since the 1992-93 season. Based on current form, Ferdinand admits a top-six finish seems unlikely.
He added: “If I sit here now and you ask me, ‘where will Man United finish?’, I would say probably sixth or seventh, I would be happy with it this season. That’s looking like a long shot at this moment in time.”
