Rooney makes Rashford feelings clear as Man Utd transfer chiefs sent message

Wayne Rooney has shared his verdict on Marcus Rashford’s time as an Aston Villa loanee, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Manchester United transfer chiefs having been sent a message. The forward was involved in Villa’s narrow Champions League defeat against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

Rashford’s evening got off to the worst possible start when he gave the ball away for the opening PSG goal during a half where the home side conceded two goals to their French opponents. Youri Tielemans and John McGinn netted either side of the break and got Villa back into the tie, before Rashford showed his class to weave past the PSG defence and set up Ezri Konsa for the Premier League side’s third of the night.

Waxing lyrical about his former team-mates’ performance, Rooney told Amazon Prime Sport: “We have to give a massive shoutout to Marcus Rashford, I thought he was fantastic, [it was like] the Rashford we’ve seen over the years. Massive skill, ability, you see here [during a replay of the goal], getting at players, driving at them, pulling the ball back.”

Later in the match, Rashford delivered a wicked cross into the penalty area, which Konsa ought to have converted with his head to level the tie on aggregate. And Rooney made his feelings clear on where he hopes Rashford is playing his football next season, saying: “The big thing [for Villa] now is keeping hold of them players, Marco Asensio, Rashford, but I hope they don’t [keep hold of them].

“I hope Rashford goes back to United and performs like he did tonight, that’s what we all want to see as Man United fans. They [Villa] would have to finish in the Champions League, it would be a waste.”

Rashford’s loan at Villa Park is set to come to an end in the summer, with the United academy product having penned a short-term deal with the West Midlands outfit in January. It came following Ruben Amorim‘s arrival at the record English champions, with the former Sporting boss appearing not to fancy Rashford during his early days as United boss.

Rashford made his United debut as a teenager in 2015 and has made over 400 appearances for the three-time European champions. He’s scored 138 goals and registered 76 assists during that time, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2028.
