Ruben Amorim admits ‘sometimes I want to quit’ Man Utd and Mainoo exit request

Ruben Amorim admitted that he “sometimes wants to quit” as Manchester United head coach while explaining his worrying comments after Wednesday’s shock defeat to Grimsby Town. The Red Devils suffered a humiliating defeat to League Two opposition in the Carabao Cup second round, intensifying the scrutiny on Amorim’s position.

The Portuguese boss’ post-match reaction raised concerns about whether he was ready to walk away during the September international break. Ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Burnley, in which United are searching for their first win of the season, Amorim clarified his actions at Blundell Park.

“To be really honest with you, guys, every time we have one defeat like that, I am going to be like that,” Amorim told reporters at Carrington on Friday.

“Sometimes I am going to say I hate my players, sometimes I am going to say I love my players. That is my way of doing things.

“In that moment, I was really upset and really disappointed because I thought we had a really good pre-season.

“We were being consistent in the way we played. Now it’s a new game, and I am focused on the game. I need to live this day-by-day. I am understanding that.”

He added: “If you are in one way, if you have this kind of behaviour, you have to understand that sometimes you have good things and the other side of the coin. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years.”

Amorim expanded on what hurt him about United’s defeat at Grimsby, stating: “I think that is the hardest part of the defeat.

“Sometimes it is not the result, it is the way we lost that game or drew that game. It is the small things: fighting for the ball, running.”

Uncertainty over Kobbie Mainoo’s future has added to the all-too-familiar crisis feel at Old Trafford. The 20-year-old midfielder reportedly wants to leave on loan for more regular minutes before Monday’s deadline.

However, Amorim confirmed that United had no plans to let him leave and insisted that Mainoo is in his plans this season.

“Until [Mainoo’s future] is official, I cannot say much. I want Kobbie [Mainoo] to stay. He needs to fight for his place,” Amorim explained.

“We need Kobbie. I understand that the players who aren’t playing in this moment are disappointed. You have to fight during the week.”

The United boss has previously made it clear that Mainoo is competing with club captain Bruno Fernandes for opportunities after giving him zero minutes in the opening two Premier League games.
