Bryan Mbeumo is set to join his new Manchester United team-mates in time for their pre-season trip to Chicago next week. The Red Devils, who are flying to the United States on Tuesday, have finally struck a deal with Brentford for the forward, with a £65million plus £6m add-ons fee satisfying the Bees.
Mbeumo is expected to be on board the plane as United head to America to face West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton in the Premier League Summer Series. However, United boss Ruben Amorim has become frustrated with the club’s hierarchy over the length of time it took to secure the Mbeumo deal.
While the United top brass acted promptly to confirm the £62.5m signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, more than a month has passed since then without any further arrivals. The pursuit of Mbeumo hit a snag before a deal was eventually agreed for the 25-year-old.
Amorim recognises the reluctance of those at the helm at United to repeat past mistakes that led the club towards financial turmoil. Still, the Portuguese head coach knows he needs new signings now if he is to stand any chance of reviving the fallen giants from their lowest ebb in half a century.
Amorim has maintained his firm, no-nonsense approach, banishing five players from training – Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malaica – after all expressed their wish to leave. However, while all five outcasts remain unsold and grounded for the US tour, Amorim’s rebuilding plans are compromised.
Indeed, United must offload players before they can bring in new ones. Alongside Mbeumo, Amorim is keen to secure a creative midfielder and a reliable striker, as Rasmus Hojlund has evidently not met expectations.
Amorim had hoped to have all his targets on board ahead of United’s pre-season tour, allowing ample time for them to acclimatise to his requirements and fully integrate with their new colleagues and surroundings.
Understandably, Amorim’s patience is wearing thin as he is forced to work with one hand tied behind his back and the new season looming large on the horizon.
