Ruben Amorim may not have ultimate control over Manchester United‘s transfer dealings but he will still be keen to have his say when the window opens next month.
While former boss Erik ten Hag had huge sway over incomings and outgoings, the responsibility has now been passed to senior Old Trafford figures Dan Ashworth, Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, who are set to formulate their January transfer plan with Amorim’s input.
And they may be wise to brace for a big decision, with Real Madrid reportedly sniffing around Diogo Dalot. The Spanish giants are in the market for a new right-back and Dalot has made their shortlist along with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Pedro Porro.
According to GIVEMESPORT‘s Ben Jacobs, Real believe they could tempt United into doing business by lodging a £45million offer for Dalot. But the same report suggests that Amorim would not let it happen without a fight.
It is understood that the former Sporting manager has made it clear to Ashworth, Wilcox and Berrada that he wants time to assess his squad before rash decisions are made about significant sales or purchases.
Dalot has featured in all four of Amorim’s matches since he took charge, playing the full 90 minutes in three of them, and his ability to fill in on either flank makes him a valuable asset while United transition to their new boss’ system.
Amorim has barely had any time to gather intel on his Red Devils squad. The Portuguese has seven more matches before the transfer window opens, but he admits that he is still nowhere near comfortable having signed for the club midway through the season.
“I get anxious because I don’t know what will happen,” he told TNT Sports last month. “We don’t control anything at the moment, we are trying to see different things.
“I don’t know the players and we have not worked a lot together. We go to the game excited, but at the same time you are nervous because you don’t know how the game will go.”
As the learning process continues, Amorim is preparing for a home clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday, before a Europa League trip to face Viktoria Plzen. A tough double-header against Manchester City and Tottenham will follow in what promises to be a demanding festive fixture schedule.
