Thomas Tuchel England contract details as new manager set for late start date

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has reportedly signed an 18-month deal to take over as England manager – but he is not set to start in his role until January 1 next year.

Tuchel agreed to take over as England boss on Tuesday evening, and an official announcement could come as early as Wednesday. A press conference has been scheduled for 1.30pm at Wembley, according to Sky Sports.

Tuchel will be the third non-Englishman to hold the post, succeeding Gareth Southgate who resigned after losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain.

Di Marzio report that Tuchel has signed an 18-month contract and will begin the job on January 1, meaning interim boss Lee Carsley will continue to lead the squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Greece and Ireland.

Tuchel, who led Chelsea to Champions League triumph in 2021 and has managed Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, was chosen after the FA also approached Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. The FA had stated nationality was not a factor in their search for the best candidate.

Carsley, Englands Under-21 coach, has been shouldering the responsibilities of the senior team during their current Nations League run. Despite his interim involvement, ambiguity surrounding his desire to stay left the door open for speculation.

Following England’s defeat by Greece last Thursday, momentum has been building around the prospect that the FA might look elsewhere for a long-term leader.

Tuchel, with prior stints at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, emerged as a potential candidate, particularly after his departure from Bayern Munich last summer. His arrival could rekindle his rapport with England and Bayern striker Harry Kane.

Discussing the likelihood of Tuchel stepping into the role with Sky Sports News, Kane shared: “I haven’t been told anything. Until it is announced I can’t really comment but obviously I know Thomas well from last year. He is a fantastic coach, a fantastic person. I’m sure the guys at the FA will contact me when they know more about it.”
