Trent Alexander-Arnold’s telling body language as expert spots ‘signs of regret’

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave Liverpool may already be causing him regret, according to body language expert Judi James. The England star announced his departure from Anfield on social media, revealing he will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

His move to Real Madrid seems almost certain, given the Spanish giants’ long-standing interest in him. His decision to leave has upset many Liverpool fans, especially as he is leaving on a free transfer. Having joined the club at just six years old, Alexander-Arnold rose through the academy ranks before making the right-back position his own. Considering his long history with the club and his emotional expressions during an interview following Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea, James suggests that Alexander-Arnold might already be second-guessing his decision.

While speaking to Mirror Football, she said: “This sounds and looks almost like a divorce video. As though Trent is a husband announcing a break-up and moving out of a long-term love affair, but hoping there will be no bitterness for the sake of the kids.

“There are signals of regret and even being slightly overwhelmed by emotion at one point. When he says the club is ‘all I’ve ever known’ there is a subtle change of state, and a hint of confused or mixed emotions as one eyebrow lifts in the middle while the other drops and he shakes his head from side to side.

“Then his brows rise into a steeple while his eyes narrow and his tongue pokes from his mouth in a suggestion of rejection. There is a pause when he seems to be battling his emotions, letting out a sigh and closing his eyes as though inwardly battling with tears.

“When he thanks everyone for their support he scrunches his shoulders in a gesture of vulnerability. At any moment you expect him to add, ‘It’s not you, it’s me’.

“His expression becomes slightly more intense and fiercer as he gains some energy as he lets the fans know ‘I’ll be back’ with an air of determination and intent.”

During his illustrious stint at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold garnered a treasure trove of titles including two Premier League trophies, a Champions League title, an FA Cup win, Club World Cup glory, and a duo of League Cups. Not long after being handed his debut by Brendan Rodgers, his career peaked under Jurgen Klopp, establishing him as a spectacular talent on the defensive line.

In his final bow under Arne Slot‘s leadership, Alexander-Arnold was instrumental in leading Liverpool to clinch their 20th league title, securing victory with games in hand.

In the meantime, the defender is poised to join forces with England colleague and good friend Jude Bellingham in Madrid. The duo have developed a close bond during their tenure with the Three Lions.
