Danny Welbeck has provided an update on his back injury after he was stretchered off during Brighton’s victory over Newcastle on Saturday.
The striker scored the all-important goal in the Seagulls’ 1-0 win at St James’ Park, playing a neat one-two with Georginio Rutter before slotting past Nick Pope in the 35th minute to give Fabian Hurzeler’s side the lead against the run of play.
Brighton dug deep to hold on to the one-goal lead and withstand the Newcastle pressure, though they were handed a setback when Welbeck dropped to the ground with a worrying-looking back injury.
The ex-Arsenal and Manchester United star appeared to have minorly collided with Fabian Schar before dropping to the ground clutching his lower back, with replays showing that there was very little impact in the collision.
Welbeck was then stretchered off of the pitch needing oxygen in a concerning sight for Brighton given that their No. 18 has started the season in a rich vein of goal-scoring form.
The striker has now provided a positive update on his condition, revealing that he intends to return to the Seagulls’ training soon in a message which will be music to the ears of Hurzeler.
Welbeck tweeted: “Still a bit sore, but after some extra checks and scan today, I’m pleased to say I should be back in training soon. Thanks to our medical staff and Newcastle Royal Infirmary A&E for their care and professionalism. Also to the boys for waiting for me to get home! Huge 3 points.”
The England international has scored five goals and assisted one in eight Premier League appearances, and the 33-year-old’s absence is sure to be felt if he is to spend time on the sidelines at the Amex Stadium.
However, Hurzeler has made it no secret that Welbeck brings more to the table than just his goal-scoring ability. Speaking earlier this season, the German said: “He’s a role model on and off the pitch – a gentleman with a lot of experience who is taking care of his team-mates, taking care of the culture and environment of the whole club.
“He is helpful in every phase. And on top of that, he is in great shape. Of course, there are lots of things where he can improve but I’m very happy with how he’s doing so far.”
