What is the lowest league finish for a team that has won a European Trophy?

Tottenham Hotspur became the team with the lowest ever domestic league finish to become a European champion after it beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League 2024-25 final at the Sam Mames Stadium on Thursday.

Tottenham has also sealed a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League, offering a lifeline despite its poor league form.

It is currently 17th in the league table with 38 points from 37 games, eclipsing West Ham United’s record of 14th place when it wone the UEFA Conference League in 2023.

Here’s a list of clubs won Major European trophies despite finishing in bottom halves of leagues:

Club Season Competition League Position
Arsenal 1969-70 Inter-Cities Fair Cup 12
Inter Milan 1993-94 UEFA Cup 13
FC Schalke 1996-97 UEFA Cup 12
Sevilla 2022-23 Europa League 12
West Ham United 2022-23 UEFA Conference league 14
Tottenham Hotpur 2024-25 UEFA Europa League 17*

*Tottenham can finish as high as 14th in the league if it manages to beat Brighton and Hove Albion on the final matchday on May 25 and each of Manchester United (16th), West Ham United (15th) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (14th) lose their games.
