Manchester United have decided to focus their financial resources on the summer transfer window rather than recruit a centre-forward before the January market closes, despite their current lack of a prolific goalscorer.
And Ruben Amorim is said to be pleased with United’s business this month although they have loaned out Marcus Rashford and Antony without signing a replacement.
The Red Devils will not make any further signings before the 11pm deadline, even though they’ve failed to find the back of the net in nine Premier League matches this season, including a recent defeat to Crystal Palace.
Despite being 13th in the league with a minus-six goal difference, the club has refrained from making any hasty decisions in the transfer market.
The £108.5million spent on strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in the past two summers has limited United’s ability to bolster their attack.
Hojlund has yet to score in 13 games, while Zirkzee has only managed one goal in 16 appearances. The club’s management had no plans to bring in a temporary signing that could be seen as a panic buy.
Instead, they’ve focused on younger talent, with winter window signings Ayden Heaven, 18, and Patrick Dorgu, 20, more in line with the £58m deal for Leny Yoro last summer.
Last month, United confessed to a fans’ group that they risk breaching the Premier League‘s profitability and sustainability rules, which also hindered any deal for a striker.
Dorgu was signed from Lecce for £25m, potentially rising to £29m, while United paid Arsenal a compensation fee for Heaven.
The club’s financial constraints significantly influenced their transfer activity, and they continue to explore ways to cut costs and increase revenues.
Per the Manchester Evening News, United’s top brass and head coach Ruben Amorim are pleased with their winter transfer dealings, eagerly awaiting the summer arrival of Paraguayan prodigy Diego Leon once he hits 18.
The Red Devils have their sights set on nurturing talents like Leon, Dorgu, and Heaven without breaking the bank.
Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s INEOS Group took the reins, United’s recruitment policy has focused on snapping up players no older than 26, with Yoro, Heaven, and Leon all in their teens. The club has shunned short-term fixes to maintain this youth-centric strategy.
United considered options such as Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, who is set to join Tottenham, and Chelsea‘s Christopher Nkunku but ultimately will not welcome a new attacker after opting to trim their forward line.
Even with a leaner attack, United are said to have adopted a “sensible and financially disciplined approach” during the winter window, keeping an eye on preserving funds for a summer spree.
This could potentially lead to a significant striker signing in the summer, given the difficulties faced by Hojlund and Zirkzee. Early in the season, some members of United’s hierarchy expressed concerns about Zirkzee.
