Carlos Alcaraz has distanced himself from a lawsuit filed by the Novak Djokovic-led Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA), saying he had no prior knowledge of it.
“I am not supporting that. So that’s it,” Alcaraz said at a Miami Open press conference.
The PTPA, claiming support from 250+ players, sued tennis’ governing bodies in New York, Brussels, and London, calling them a “cartel.” The lawsuit targets:
- ATP & WTA tours (men’s and women’s circuits)
- International Tennis Federation (ITF)
- International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA)
What’s the Issue?
The suit alleges that these organisations:
- Cap prize money unfairly
- Restrict rival events from competing
- Control rankings to limit player movement
- Enforce harsh penalties in anti-corruption policies
Alcaraz was surprised to see his own past quotes in the lawsuit. He had once criticised the tour schedule, joking that organisers were “going to kill us in some way.” But he clarified that he wasn’t consulted about using his words in the legal filing.
“Honestly, it was surprising. Nobody told me,” he said.
