Alexander Zverev gives pointed reply to Boris Becker coaching rumour

Alexander Zverev has told the media they can continue to speculate on whether Boris Becker is his new coach. The world No. 2 has refused to comment on rumours after his training session was watched by the iconic former Grand Slam champion.

Becker watched on as Zverev prepared for the Monte-Carlo Masters. The 57-year-old has not coached since parting ways with Holger Rune last year. It prompted speculation that Zverev has appointed Becker as his new coach. However, the 27-year-old insisted that they simply have a “great connection” and that he would not comment on the coaching rumours until they had something official to announce.

Asked if Becker is his new coach, Zverev told Sky Sports: “Boris and I have a great connection. If anything happens, we’ll let you know… In the meantime, you can speculate and make a story out of it. I’m not saying anything about it.”

Zverev has been unhappy with his form this season. After his defeat against Arthur Fils in the Miami Open last-16, he bemoaned his inability to close out matches in which he is in control.

“I have been losing a lot of matches where I feel like I am in control lately,” Zverev said. “It was that again, so I have to look at myself more than anything else.

“I definitely played better here than the last two weeks. But I am up a break in the third, there is no reason for me to lose that match and I go on to lose four games in a row.”

Becker believes Zverev’s ‘mental attitude’ has stood in the way of more success on tour.

The German said: “I always start with it, with the mental attitude, he is not as convinced of himself at the moment as he was in Melbourne or as he was at the end of last year. Can you train something like that?

“I know in Florida, there are the best training centres for forehand and backhand, for fitness, but is there also a school for mentality, for self-confidence, for inner peace, for inner faith? I don’t think so, and that’s something where I think a little that he just has to look there, who can take him further, who can help him there, because ultimately for me that is the difference between victory and defeat with him at the moment.”
