Andy Murray has left an indelible mark on the world of tennis – a pioneer for British sport with two Wimbledon titles, a US Open crown, and a pair of Olympic gold medals. Now enjoying retirement, his rise from Dunblane to international fame is a tale of determination and perseverance.
Off the court, Murray’s story is just as compelling – marked by financial success, close-knit relationships, and personal hardships that have shaped the man behind the champion. As he celebrates his 38th birthday, Express Sport reflects on the legacy of an athlete who changed the face of British tennis – uncovering the influences, private battles, and inner fire that define Sir Andy Murray.
Net worth
Murray’s wealth, reportedly close to £100million, mirrors a career filled with championship triumphs and savvy financial planning. His best year for prize money came in 2016, pulling in £10.8m, including £1.6m for his landmark 2013 Wimbledon win.
Outside tennis, endorsement deals with big names such as Under Armour, Jaguar, and Castore have significantly increased his earnings. He also boasts a luxurious £5m mansion in Oxshott, Surrey, equipped with top-tier amenities like a pool, home gym, and massage room, acquired in 2009.
He sold a Miami apartment for a significant return and later bought Cromlix House, a boutique hotel near Dunblane, in 2014 for £1.8m. The elegant Victorian estate, where he wed wife Kim, now operates as a luxury retreat and income source, reflecting his instinct for turning passion into business success.
Beyond properties, Murray’s portfolio includes hospitality investments and enduring sponsorships that support his post-retirement lifestyle. His recent performance in a dramatic Melbourne advert playing an action role shows he’s still in demand. He’s also taking steps into the coaching world, having recently wrapped up a brief mentorship with Novak Djokovic.

Raducanu apology
In 2024, tensions arose between Murray and fellow British tennis star Emma Raducanu when she pulled out of their mixed doubles partnership at Wimbledon, citing wrist concerns. This sudden decision ended Murray’s last appearance at the tournament, drawing criticism – with Judy Murray calling it “astonishing” on social media.
Raducanu defended her move, insisting he had to focus on her own health and singles matches. “I have to prioritise myself, my singles, and my body,” she said. Although the timing was emotionally charged, particularly due to Murray’s exit from the sport, the pair have since patched things up.
In early 2025, Raducanu revealed she had written a heartfelt apology after reaching the third round of the Australian Open. “I just hope he doesn’t hate me too much,” she said, expressing deep respect for the three-time Grand Slam winner.

According to Raducanu, Murray replied with understanding despite his initial disappointment. “We’re fine now,” she claimed, adding that they now greet each other with friendly “hello” and “well done” exchanges.
There is renewed talk of Murray potentially guiding Raducanu in a coaching role, especially after ending his time with Djokovic. Murray had earlier said she was a player he’d love to coach.
With Raducanu splitting from coach Nick Cavaday in January 2025 due to his illness, she is actively seeking a permanent coaching solution. Mark Petchey, who stepped in to coach her for the grass season, believes Murray’s strategic brilliance is an ideal fit.
“If that option came up for Emma she would be mad not to take it,” Petchey said last June. “That would be the dream team in so many ways. He would be phenomenal.”

Kim’s confession
Behind the spotlight and the trophies lies a more private account of hardship, as told by Kim Murray in a revealing 2024 interview. She opened up about the difficult years when Andy battled severe injuries, especially a “really quite horrendous” hip condition in 2017.
Then ranked world No.1, Murray had to withdraw from key competitions, losing his spot to Rafael Nadal. With their second child on the way, Kim watched him suffer through daily pain, unable to even play with daughter Sophia on the floor.
“It was very hard living with him throughout that,” she told The Telegraph in August. “He was genuinely miserable… just walking the dog was awful.”
She added: “He’d reached the pinnacle in his sport, and he was at home with Sophia, and he was in too much pain to get down onto the floor to play with her… I found it awful too, because it was such hard work.”

Kim’s raw account underscores the emotional and physical toll of a high-level career. The couple, who met at a 2005 US Open party, wed in 2015 after briefly separating in 2009. Today, they have four children: Sophia, Edie, Teddy, and Lola.
Kim, the daughter of tennis coach Nigel Sears, was a familiar face in the stands, offering unwavering support throughout Murray’s highs and lows. Her presence was crucial, with Andy once stating, “I work better in a relationship… it’s nice to have someone to talk to about other stuff.”
Now retired, Murray seems ready for his next chapter – bolstered by financial security, strong family ties, and an emerging future in coaching.
