Aryna Sabalenka has been enjoying a holiday in Mykonos with her super-rich boyfriend in the wake of her French Open heartbreak. She was beaten by Coco Gauff in the final, with the young American coming from behind to win in three sets. After the match, Sabalenka caused a stir by downplaying Gauff’s victory in an extraordinary press conference.
The world’s top-ranked player claimed that Gauff only managed to win “not because she played incredible, but because I made all those mistakes”. The comments sparked a wave of criticism, with Sabalenka later expressing regret for the way she handled things. She admitted that her behaviour was ‘completely unprofessional’ and revealed she had written to Gauff to apologise.
Sabalenka went on to escape the controversy by travelling to Mykonos for a tequila-fuelled holiday. She was accompanied by her boyfriend Georgios Frangulis, a Brazilian business mogul who has an estimated net worth of £80million.
On Instagram, Sabalenka posted a series of pictures showing the happy couple soaking up the sun on an idyllic beach. She also shared a video of herself stroking a stray cat, in addition to some of her holiday outfits and more pictures of Frangulis.
One of the images showed Sabalenka holding an alcoholic drink, suggesting she delivered on her promise to drown the sorrows of her French Open collapse in ‘tequila and gummy bears’.
“I already have a flight booked to Mykonos and alcohol, sugar,” said the Belarusian after the final. “I just need a couple of days to completely forget about this crazy… if I could swear, I would swear right now, but this crazy thing that happened today.
“I think everyone understands. I’m just trying to be very polite right now, but there is no other word that could describe what just happened today on the court. Tequila, gummy bears and swimming, being like a tourist for a couple of days.”
Sabalenka is known to be a huge fan of tequila, having promised free drinks to US Open fans after winning last year’s tournament.
Addressing the crowd after beating Jessica Pegula in the final, she said: “Drinks on me tonight? So guys, marg-’Aryna’ for everyone from Dobel Tequila. You’re welcome.”
Sabalenka actually kept her promise, linking up with sponsors Dobel to offer supporters a $10 (£7.44) discount on any of their cocktails or neat serves.
