British tennis pundit in talks over surprise new job after breaking Trump rule

British tennis pundit Laura Robson is reportedly in talks over a surprise new role, just days after she caused a stir at the US Open. The 31-year-old, who was born in Australia, has enjoyed a successful TV career since hanging up her racket in 2022. She is a regular pundit at Grand Slam events and was on duty with Sky Sports for last weekend’s US Open final.

While in New York, Robson fell foul of the guidelines while discussing the crowd reaction to Donald Trump‘s presence. Broadcasters were asked not to show ‘any disruptions or reactions in response to the president’s attendance’. Robson, however, referenced the unfriendly crowd response, saying: “They’ve just shown Trump on the big screen, lots of boos.”

Now, it has been claimed by The Guardian that she is being lined up for a new role with TNT Sports. The report states that Robson is discussing the possibility of moving into cricket by fronting their coverage of the Ashes later this year.

She has reportedly been offered a reporting role that would see her travel to Australia for the five-match series. The channel’s main commentary and studio punditry during the Ashes will be provided off-site in Europe.

Alastair Cook is also set to provide expert analysis from the studio, meaning he will not be flying to Australia. Kate Mason is expected to present, with negotiations said to be progressing well even though contracts are yet to be signed.

Robson, meanwhile, has combined punditry with senior administrative roles since retiring from tennis due to a combination of hip and wrist injuries.

She previously spent two years as the tournament director of the WTA 250 event in Nottingham. Earlier this year, she moved into the same position at Queen’s Club as women’s tennis returned to the London venue for the first time in over five decades.

Robson was not the only tennis figure to speak about Trump’s attendance at the US Open final, which saw Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner in four sets to claim the trophy.

Martina Navratilova was also reporting for Sky Sports and made a scathing comment after the match was delayed because of Trump’s arrival.

“For the final to be postponed because of this is absolutely insane,” she stated. “People have paid thousands of dollars for these tickets. It was half empty at the start. Normally, this place would be rocking.”

Navratilova also skewered Trump after he failed to join the applause for Alcaraz before the start of the final, branding him ‘jealous’.

Taking to social media, she wrote: “Never saw Trump clap. Not once. He is so jealous!!! And when the whole place erupted clapping for Bruce Springsteen while playing Born in the USA it was magical.”
