Carlos Alcaraz has opened up on not having access to ‘big luxuries’ while he was growing up in Spain. The tennis star has previously discussed coming from a ‘medium-class’ family who only had what was necessary.
Alcaraz has become one of the leading stars of the new generation of tennis talent ready to take over from the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and his idol, Rafael Nadal. The 21-year-old is already a four-time Grand Slam champion.
However, it was not all plain sailing for a young Alcaraz and he has discussed not having luxury items.
“When I was a kid we didn’t have big luxuries. But the small things make the difference. We came from a medium-class family where he had what was necessary. I was always happy with what I had,” Alcaraz said at the launch of his own exhibition event in Murcia, Spain.
“I was passionate about sport and tennis in particular, but it was a very normal childhood. Today we are here, feeling very lucky and grateful and wanting to do our bit by getting moving for children.”
Alcaraz endured a mixed 2024. A fantastic summer saw him scoop the French Open and his second Wimbledon title. He reached the final of the Olympics but was beaten by Djokovic in an epic showdown.
An Australian Open title in January would mean Alcaraz had won all four Grand Slams before turning 22. He is hoping for a smoother 2025.
“I am a very ambitious person and I want to win the Australian Open to complete the Career Grand Slam,” he continued.
“I want 2025 to be even more exciting. Let’s say I want more. Australia is what I want to tattoo, even if my father doesn’t like it very much. Being champion there is my main goal for next season.
“[2024] was a year of ups and downs, but still positive. I still get emotional when I watch the videos of Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Obviously, I have a team with me and this award is also for the people who support me.
“Well, I start a hard month of training, but spending Christmas and New Year’s at home is wonderful and gives me a break. Sometimes it’s difficult to find happiness, but I want people to have fun with me.”
