Coco Gauff is gearing up for the French Open final with a steely determination, ready to take on Aryna Sabalenka in what could be her second Grand Slam triumph.
The 21 year old American sensation breezed past local favourite Lois Boisson, dominating with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory. Despite Boisson’s unranked status, she had made waves at the tournament, notching impressive wins against Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva while showcasing formidable skill on the court.
Boisson, backed by a passionate French crowd, aimed to pull off a major upset, but Gauff’s composure and superior play proved overwhelming.
This victory propels the prodigiously gifted Gauff into her third Grand Slam final appearance. She clinched the U.S. Open title in 2023 but fell short at a previous French Open final against Iga Swiatek.
Facing world No. 1 Sabalenka, Gauff is pegged as the underdog, yet she’s determined to sidestep the disappointment of her last Roland Garros showdown.
With the big match looming on Saturday, Gauff has impressed fans with her mental toughness. Reflecting on her approach to handling the pressure, she remarked: “I think just realizing how minuscule it is.
“Everyone is dealing with way bigger things in life than losing a final. Also, realizing how many players wanted to be in this position.”
Reflecting on her dramatic journey and looking ahead to the next challenge, tennis star Gauff remarked with humility: “I’m sure there are hundreds of players that would kill to win or lose a final. So just knowing that makes me realize how lucky and privileged I am to be in this position.”
She offered a candid insight into her resilience saying, “At first I thought it’d be the end of the world if I lost. And you know, the sun still rose the next day. So knowing regardless of the result, the sun will still rise.”
The athlete shared an amusing perspective on fame and recognition: “Especially being in a city like Paris, I was walking around the next day, and no one knew that I lost. No one cared.”
Gauff then gave a philosophical touch to her thoughts by adding, “Some people know who I am, but not everyone. Just realizing how big the moment seems in our lives is not as big in the grand scheme of things.”
Discussing the challenges she faced in last year’s final, Gauff mentioned how nerves significantly impacted her, but also expressed renewed confidence for her upcoming endeavours.
Highlighting her mental growth and continued ambition, she said: “I was super nervous going into that final. Obviously, I’m playing Aryna, it’s going to be a tough match but overall I think I’m just really proud of myself.”
She concluded on a determined note, keeping her sights firmly set on future successes: “There’s still a lot more work to do but I’m just going to enjoy this one and tomorrow I’ll start the preparation for the final.”
