Ed Sheeran ‘downed 10 pints’ before crashing awkward Ruben Amorim interview

Ed Sheeran has revealed that he downed 10 pints before gate-crashing Ruben Amorim’s first post-match interview with Sky Sports. The Manchester United boss had just watched his new team draw 1-1 with Ipswich when the pop superstar walked in on the live broadcast to greet pundit Jamie Redknapp.

At the time, Sheeran wandered up to Redknapp during Sky’s live broadcast, looked at Amorim, and quipped: “I don’t think he wants to speak to me!”

The Red Devils boss initially smiled but was clearly unimpressed. The Portuguese coach, who has since endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, shook his head as Sheeran finally departed the scene.

Sheeran, who sponsors Ipswich’s shirts and has a 1.4 per cent stake in the club, has since revealed that having his Portman Road executive suite turned into a pub led to him sinking 10 pints before he made his way onto the pitch. Speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast, the 34-year-old revealed: “I had [the executive suite] gutted and turned into a pub, you don’t need to go for pre-drinks anywhere else. And it’s definitely got me in trouble sometimes.

“Like that United game where I didn’t realise Amorim was getting interviewed. I honestly didn’t.

“Jamie [Redknapp] said come and see me afterwards and I was wandering out afterwards. I’d had about 10 pints, saw Jamie, so I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll go up and say hi to Jamie’. It was the wrong time – very clearly the wrong time – but I have learned my lesson and it won’t happen again.”

Sheeran is a boyhood Ipswich fan but faces the very real prospect of seeing his team relegated from the Premier League after only a year. Kieran McKenna’s side are nine points from safety and still need to play the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle before the end of the season.

Meanwhile, United have had a troubled start to the Amorim era and will need a drastic upturn in form to finish in the top half of the Premier League. The 13th-placed Red Devils are seven points off Bournemouth, who are 10th. United have lost eight league games under Amorim and it is expected that a major overhaul will be conducted in the summer to ensure the 40-year-old has a stronger squad next season.
