India to play Switzerland away in Davis Cup World Group I tie in September

India will take on Switzerland in a Davis Cup World Group I tie in September, as per the draw held by the International Tennis Federation office in London on Thursday.

Switzerland will host the tie and choose the surface for the same. The fixture will be held between September 12 and 14.

Last month, India beat Togo 4-0 in a World Group I Play-off in New Delhi while Switzerland went down 1-3 to Spain in the Qualifiers. The winner of the match between India and Switzerland will play in next year’s Davis Cup Qualifiers while the loser will have to play the World Group I Play-offs.

India leads the head-to-head record 2-1 but the last meeting between the two sides took place in 1993 when Leander Paes and Ramesh Krishnan combined for a 3-2 win in Kolkata.

Switzerland’s top singles players are World No. 121 Alexander Ritschard, World No. 131 Jerome Kym, World No. 165 and three-time Major champion Stan Wawrinka, and World No. 172 Marc-Andrea Huesler.

World No. 101 Jakub Paul is Switzerland’s highest ranked doubles player.

For India, World No. 132 Sumit Nagal is the top singles player. In doubles, World No. 39 Yuki Bhambri is country’s No. 1 player given that Rohan Bopanna, World No. 21, retired from the team competition in 2023.

However, Bhambri and Nagal have missed India’s last two and three Davis Cup ties, respectively.

The team that faced Togo comprised Mukund Sasikumar, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Karan Singh as options for singles while for doubles, N. Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli were selected. Rohit Rajpal was the non-playing captain.
