Arvind Iyer emerges winner in All India Chess Masters Mumbai FIDE Classical

Arvind Iyer has been crowned champion of the All India Chess Masters Mumbai FIDE Classical Tournament after finishing with seven points in eight rounds to edge out Darsh Shetty in a strong competition.

In fact, both Arvind and Darsh finished with seven points each but the former won the championship on super Buchholz tie-breaks.

Shetty finished as the runner-up position while the third position was claimed by International Master Vikramaditya Kulkarni, who accumulated 6.5 points.

The winner received a cash prize of Rs. 40,000.

In women’s category, Woman Candidate Master Kriti Mayur Patel was adjudged as the Best Player, followed by Reya Banker and Pradeepa Jayapal who secured second and third place respectively.

Vinod Chaturvedi finished first in the veteran’s category, followed by Guru Prasad Patil and Ashok Govindrao Patil at second and third.

WRESTLING

Kajal wins India’s second gold medal

Young wrestler Kajal won the second gold at the Under-20 World Championships while Shruti and Saarika grabbed bronze medals, helping India secure runner-up trophy in the women’s event.

Kajal, the 2024 Cadet world champion and reigning U-20 Asian champion, battle past China’s Yuqi Liu 8-6 in a stiff 72kg final. Also cashing on the medal opportunities were Shruti (50kg) and Saarika (53kg).

Shruti was in complete control in the bronze play-off against Germany’s Josephine Wrensch, winning 6-0, and Saarika too was impressive, winning by technical superiority (11-0) against Poland’s Ilona Valchuk.

Priya Malik, a World Under-20 champion in 2023, picked up the silver medal after being pinned by European World U-20 champion Nadiia Sokolovska in the women’s 76kg final at the World under-20 wrestling championships in Samokov, Bulgaria.

In Greco Roman, Suraj (60kg) fought back to beat Frenchman Lucas Lo Grasso 1-1 via criteria and bag a bronze medal.

India wins team bronze at World Youth Archery Championships

Indian archers claimed the Under-18 recurve women’s team bronze while staying in medal contention in four other team events, including three finals, at the World youth Archery Championships in Winnipeg, Canada.

Men: India (Agastay Singh, Soham Kanase, Aditya Pawar) got a bye (1st round), bt France 6-0 (2nd round), bt Japan 5-3 (3rd round), lost to Chinese Taipei 3-5 (semifinal), lost to Turkey 3-5 (bronze medal match)

Women: India (Gatha Khadake, Jiana Kumar, Sharvari Shende) got a bye (1st round), bt Mexico 6-0 (2nd round), bt Japan 5-3 (3rd round), lost to Korea 2-6 (semifinal), bt USA 6-0 (bronze medal match)

Chandigarh, Sikkim, Meghalaya shine in Subroto Cup

Kerala’s Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial School, Thrissur, sealed a 2-0 win over Harish Pawar Higher Secondary School, Nainital, while Chhattisgarh’s Mata Rukhmani Kanya Ashram registered a 3-0 victory over PM Shri Govt. Mahatma Gandhi Sr. Sec. School, Andrott, Lakshadweep in the Subroto Cup Junior Girls (Under-17) category on Friday.

Assam’s Betkuchi High School and Sri Lanka School Football Association, along with APS Noida and Bihar’s Upgraded High School, Bilaspur played out goalless draws.

West Bengal’s Nandajhar Adibashi Pashili High School continued their winning form with a 2-0 triumph over PM Shri KV Senior School, Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.

Sikkim’s PM Shri Tashi Namgyal Sr. Sec. School also impressed, defeating Delhi’s Bharti Public School 3-0.

Meanwhile, Rudrapur’s Amenity Public School (CBSE) held Spring Field Hr. Sec. School (NCC) to a 1-1 draw, and Nagaland’s Govt. High School, Meriema, shared points with JNV Purulia, Mawphlang (NVS) after a 0-0 result.

Maharashtra’s Krida Prabodhini, Pune also registered a massive 20-0 victory against Air Force School, Chakeri.

Yuki Bhambri in semifinals

Yuki Bhambri in partnership with Michael Venus beat Romain Arneodo and Rohan Bopanna 7-6(2), 6-3 in the doubles quarterfinals of the $798,335 ATP tennis tournament in Winston-Salem, USA.

In the semifinals, the second seeded Indo-Kiwi pair will play the Brazilians Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo.

In the ITF men’s event in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, Sidharth Rawat beat third seed Max Basing of Britain 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 to reach the semifinals.

Heena Kang wins maiden Pro title at 11th Leg of WPGT

Heena Kang was going great guns with eight holes left but had to quell a late charge from Lavanya Gupta to bag her maiden Pro title at the 11th leg of the Women’s Pro Golf Tour, here Friday.

Heena, who was fifth on her pro debut last month, was chased hard by amateur Lavanya at the Prestige Golfshire.

Lavanya, who started the final day two shots behind Heena, had fallen five shots behind as she was 4-over by the turn. And then there was a great charge from Lavanya, who birdied the 11th, 14th, and the 16th.

Ananya Garg, who was six behind the leader, Heena, at the start, had a rough start, going three-over in the first five holes. Yet, she fought back with four birdies.

She birdied the seventh and the ninth and added two more on the 16th and the 17th. She ended the day with the best card of the final round with 1-under 71 and was in sole third.

Jasmine Shekar, playing in the leader group, struggled on the front nine with a six-over stretch that included four bogeys and one double. She had two birdies and a bogey on the back nine and carded 77 to finish fourth.

Neha Tripathi (73), amateur Riya Jadon (74), and Ananya Datar (75) were tied fifth at 223, while amateur Mannat Brar, the co-leader after Day 1, and Agrima Manral, both with 76, were tied eighth at 224. Ridhima Dilawari (74) rounded off the Top-10.

Vani Kapoor stays on top of the Hero Order of Merit with Ridhima in second place. Jasmine, Neha, and Amandeep occupy the third to fifth places.

Sandhu prevails over Udayan in marathon playoff for back-to-back wins

Yuvraj Sandhu prevailed over Udayan Mane in a marathon playoff that lasted five extra holes to win the PGTI Players Championship at the Clover Greens Golf Course and Resort on Friday.

Both Sandhu, the overnight leader by three shots, and Mane, who was overnight second, ended the regulation 72 holes with identical totals of 28-under 256 that pushed the match into a dramatic playoff.

Delhi’s Kshitij Naveed Kaul (68-67-64-66) delivered a 66 in the last round to claim the third spot at 19-under 265.

Sharma and Ahlawat have difficult start at Betfred British Masters

Veer Ahlawat was the better of the two Indians on the first day of the Betfred British Masters his 1-over 73 was good enough only for Tied-67th place.

Shubhankar Sharma with 2-over 74 was T-89 and staring at another missed cut.
