Murray almost missed Olympics on doctors’ orders as ‘really hard’ journey shared

“Because I was like, ‘Well, what if I do really well over the grass, or what if you know my level improves?’ I was starting to play well in Miami, for example, but once I had the meeting with the doctor and understood what the problem was, I was like ‘Okay, well, let’s try and see if we can get through Wimbledon and prepare well for the Olympics and try and have a good run here.'”

They did have a good run, saving five consecutive match points in round one and two more in their second match. Murray even saved one against Fritz and Paul to get a crucial break on Thursday night before they eventually lost 6-2 6-4. And it sums up the legacy he wants to leave behind.

“I think the last three matches have been a good kind of example of that really. Even today, although we played a poor match, we made it really exciting at the end, we fought right to the death, we came back from, I don’t know how many match points we saved, but it was a lot over the course of three matches,” the 37-year-old explained.

“We just kept going and I think that’s probably, aside from the technicalities of how I hit the ball and moved around the court, my personality, there’s things that I did on the court that I certainly wish I wasn’t like, I wish I’d behaved differently at times on the court, but there’s lots of things about my character on the court that I did like. I love that I always fought and gave it a go right until the end of all my matches. I had a really strong work ethic.”
