Naomi Osaka has announced that she is no longer in a relationship with her long-time boyfriend, Cordae, who is also the father of their young daughter Shai.
She revealed the news on Instagram, posting on her story: “Hi everyone, just wanted to say that Cordae and I are no longer in a relationship. No bad blood at all, he’s a great person and an awesome dad.
“Honestly really glad our paths crossed because my daughter is my biggest blessing and I was able to grow a lot from our experiences together.”
Osaka began dating Cordae in 2019 and the rapper quickly became a fixture at her matches. He was seen celebrating with her team on the court when she defeated Victoria Azarenka to win the US Open in 2020.
Their relationship was also featured in Osaka’s documentary series, which premiered on Netflix in 2021. Two years later, they announced they were expecting a child with Osaka giving birth to their daughter in the summer of 2023.
Osaka previously discussed parenting together in an interview with InStyle, saying: “We built a really good foundation. I don’t know if it’s because he’s just an easygoing guy, but I think we just respect each other’s opinions.
“And if we disagree on something, we talk it out. At the end of the day, we both want what’s best for Shai.”
Cordae, meanwhile, revealed in 2021 that he was unaware of Osaka’s fame was before their first date despite her being one of the world’s best players at the time.
He told GQ: “It’s not my sport. If you asked me about tennis, before being immersed in it because of Naomi, I could only give you Venus and Serena Williams, you know? Because they’re just part of the culture.”
Reflecting on their first date, which happened at a basketball game, Osaka said: “We were on FaceTime trying to find each other because the arena was so big. And I just remember seeing that there were so many people who wanted to take a picture with him.”
It remains to be seen where Osaka will go from here, with the 27-year-old likely to remain focused on tennis for the time being. She has dealt with her fair share of injuries in recent months and suffered another setback at the ASB Classic over the weekend.
Osaka made it through to the final but was forced to withdraw from the match and left the court in tears. Her participation at the Australian Open is now in doubt, with the first Grand Slam event of the year set to begin on Sunday.
