Novak Djokovic makes eye-catching Wimbledon call after footage fuels questions

Novak Djokovic will travel to Wimbledon on Monday after showing promising progress in his recovery from knee surgery in a recent social media video. However, a week before the Grand Slam begins, he still doesn’t know if he will win his race for fitness, leaving his participation as uncertain as ever.

Djokovic recently stunned fans in an Instagram video, which showed the Serb at the top of his game just weeks after going under the knife.

It offered plenty of hope that the seven-time Wimbledon champion would grace the grass at SW19 once again this summer.

But while Djokovic will be present at the All England Club next week, he hasn’t yet committed to competing for his latest major.

The 37-year-old had surgery in Paris just 17 days ago after withdrawing from the French Open ahead of the fifth round.

He suffered a torn medial meniscus in his right knee during his five-set victory against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.

So Djokovic raised eyebrows by posting two reality-defying videos on social media, the first of which showed him using an exercise bike and leg weight machine.

On the other, he was in high spirits as he ran, completed lunges and hit a tentative serve during what appeared to be a training camp. Djokovic’s caption read: “We keep building day by day.”

The updates drew optimism that he would be ready to star at Wimbledon and return to Paris to aim for his first Olympic gold medal from July 27.

But the former world No. 1’s decision to train at Wimbledon without knowing whether he will feature suggests that he still holds doubts.

Djokovic has lifted seven of his 24 Grand Slams at Wimbledon, reaching the last five finals.

Last year, he lost an instant five-set classic against Carlos Alcaraz on Centre Court and will be hungry to avenge his rare defeat in the English capital.

Earlier this week, Taylor Fritz, who reached the third round of Wimbledon three years ago after undergoing surgery during the French Open, revealed Djokovic had been in contact.

And the prolific Wimbledon champion has already publicly expressed his determination to return to action in time for July 1.

“My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going,” Djokovic penned after his operation.

“I’m going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible.”
