Ons Jabeur pens heartfelt message as French Open women’s row continues

Ons Jabeur took to social media to send an impassioned message about women’s tennis hours after the French Open tournament director addressed her criticisms of the schedule. A ladies’ singles match has not headlined the night session here in two years, and Jabeur recently called out organisers for failing to platform the women’s game.

On Friday morning, Amelie Mauresmo defended the tournament’s decision to give the men the primetime evening slots and hit back at suggestions that her scheduling calls sent a message that women and girls were not “worthy”.

Two-time Grand Slam finalist Jabeur has clearly already seen Mauresmo’s comments, as she wrote a heartfelt statement paying tribute to her colleagues and rivals, and slamming those who didn’t respect women in tennis.

“A lot of amazing athletes have been told the same things over and over. That no one watches. That no one cares. That women’s sport doesn’t ‘move people’,” the former world No. 2 started.

“Judgement comes quickly often from those who’ve never even watched a fill match. One empty stadium is held up as proof. The packed ones? Conveniently ignored. A missed shot becomes a headline. The hundreds of brilliant ones? Forgotten.”
