Grigor Dimitrov had to be checked over by doctors at the Miami Open after Emma Raducanu required her vitals being looked at. Following his emphatic victory over Francisco Cerundolo, the Bulgarian star was attended to by medics.
The testing conditions in the Sunshine State are taking their toll on some players, with the heat and humidity creating issues for those reaching the latter stages of the event.
Dimitrov impressed in his victory over Cerundolo, securing a 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(3) success to book his spot in the final four in Miami.
He will now face the winner of the clash between Novak Djokovic and Sebastian Korda. However, that match has been delayed by 24 hours due to Raducanu’s match against Jessica Pegula going into three sets, and therefore beyond 11pm. Matches are not allowed to start after this time due to ATP and WTA rules.
Dimitrov may be thankful for the extended break though, having been seen having his vitals checked following his clash with Cerundolo – which ultimately came to an end after two hours and 48 minutes.
After winning the contest, Dimitrov congratulated Cerundolo before asking tournament officials to delay his post-match interviews to receive medical assistance. The 33-year-old appeared to have worn himself into the ground to secure the victory, having his vitals checked before being helped off of the court by officials.
Dimitrov was not the only player who needed a check-up due to the testing Miami conditions. Raducanu was attended to by a doctor during her defeat to Pegula.
The Brit was looked over during the second set of her match, with medics keen to bring her temperature down quickly. Ice was placed on Raducanu’s back and legs, with the 22-year-old also being given two ice towels whilst having her blood pressure checked.
Speaking after the match, Raducanu admitted to feeling unwell as a result of the rising temperatures in Miami. She explained: “I just felt really dizzy. I felt faint. I don’t know, it was very humid out there and we have a long wait, so maybe just an accumulation, and just physical points as well and there were long rallies and heavy conditions, but….yeah, I don’t know how I kind of regrouped in that second set, but in the third, I definitely struggled a little bit.”
