Wimbledon BBC commentator hits back at Nick Kyrgios with pair set for showdown

BBC commentator Andrew Castle has hit back at Nick Kyrgios after he was labelled a ‘clown’ by the tennis star. The pair are set to work together at Wimbledon this year in what promises to be a frosty reunion.

During last year’s men’s singles final, Kyrgios hit out at Castle’s commentary and publicly called for him to remain silent so that he could enjoy the match.

The Aussie said: “Whoever is the clown next to [Todd] Woodbridge in that commentator box needs to just not speak, spoiling the match big time.” Kyrgios then laughed after being told by one fan that Castle made it to the third round at Queen’s in 1986.

The pair will have the opportunity to chat about their respective careers this summer though, as the duo will feature heavily during the BBC’s coverage of Wimbledon – with Kyrgios currently sidelined through injury and thus turning his hand to punditry.

Castle has spoken out ahead of their meeting, claiming that he has ‘no issue’ with being labelled a ‘clown’. He told the Metro: “I’ve got no issue at all with any of that. Everyone has the right to an opinion. Especially someone who’s been in a Wimbledon final.

“But, you know, the fact is that sitting on your sofa or in your car, it’s pretty easy from there. So… whatever… the point of social media is that everyone has a say, including Nick.

“Hey, I’m not surprised it got picked up on. Everything Nick says gets picked up. In this world of clickbait-driven stuff, he’s a real golden boy. I look forward to seeing him and working with him.”

Castle then went on to reveal that he has been surprised by how the world of tennis was not aware that Kyrgios is a great talker and that he is looking forward to sharing the commentary box with him soon.
