Corentin Moutet has ruffled more than a few feathers on the ATP Tour while also attempting to conquer the world of music at the same time. The Frenchman booked a second-round tie at Wimbledon with Grigor Dimitrov after defeating Francisco Comesana in straight sets on day two at SW19.
However, as has become customary when Moutet is on the court, the match was not without incident. He moaned at the umpire during the contest, days after launching into a four-minute tirade at an official during his victory over Learner Tien in Mallorca.
The 26-year-old, who has never reached the third round at Wimbledon, is a keen pianist and rapper. His EP, titled ‘Ecorche’, which means ‘skin’ in French, came out in October 2020. Translated track names include: Dream, Invisible, Beautiful Hell, Little Brother, If You Knew, In The Land Of Stars, Monsters and Psychoanalysis.
He then added to the EP with two singles, ‘37.5’ in 2021 and ‘No Fake’ which came out last year.
Moutet additionally featured on another player’s single, Denis Shapovalov, having created ‘Drip’ together.
World No. 69 Moutet admitted that he even prioritised rap over tennis in 2021, telling Radio France: “Tennis and rap are at the centre of my priorities. Maybe a little more tennis because that’s what allows me to finance what I do in rap.
“In everyday life, I prefer to rap. But tennis is cool nonetheless. It’s a crazy sport, and again that’s how I make a living. I find it more fun to rap.
“But I give myself 100 per cent in both. On the court, I forget the music. And in the studio, there is no tennis.”
The Parisian’s EP was born out of boredom during Covid lockdowns, as he explained: “I had time to kill. I grew up alone, far from my parents. I felt the need to indulge in a lot of things.
“At the age of 16, this is the only way I can find expression. I took it a bit like therapy. Especially at the beginning. Then over time I began to appreciate the richness of the French language, to work more on my lyrics, to play with rhymes.”
