One dead and multiple injured after boat crashes into ferry in Florida

One person has died and multiple others are injured after a boat crashed into a ferry in Florida, police have said.

The Clearwater Police Department said the boat hit the ferry near the Memorial Causeway Bridge and then fled the scene just after 10pm local time.

All of those injured were aboard the ferry, which was carrying more than 40 people. The Florida officers then declared a “mass casualty event” due to the number of injuries.

In an update a few hours later, authorities said one person had died from their injuries.

“The boat that fled the scene has been identified by another law enforcement agency,” the police department added.

“The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be taking the lead on the crash investigation. Any further questions should be referred to that agency.”

Videos posted on social media showed several first responders rushing to the scene with lights flashing.

Police had earlier cautioned drivers to avoid Memorial Causeway, and said helicopters had transferred two of the more seriously injured victims.
